The rule, quoted

Word for word from Sec. 4-51. Keeping of animals; Sec. 4-52. Provisions for enclosures and appurtenances.

How many hens

“No more than twenty (20) such fowl shall be kept or maintained per acre.”

The number is proportional to lot size: a half-acre lot allows 10.

Sec. 4-51. Keeping of animals; Sec. 4-52. Provisions for enclosures and appurtenances.

Roosters

“No such livestock, hoofed, or cloven-hoofed animal or fowl that crows, honks, quacks or cocks shall be permitted in an area not zoned agricultural.”

Crowing fowl are allowed only on agriculturally zoned land.

Permit and fee

“It shall be unlawful for any person to own, keep, have, permit anyone to keep or maintain within the corporate city limits any hoofed or cloven-hoofed animals or other livestock as defined in section 4-2. "Definitions", or any chickens, turkeys, ducks, guineas, geese, pigeons, ostrich, emu or any other domestic fowl, or similar animal, without first receiving from the animal control unit a permit to do so unless such animal is located in an area that is zoned for the keeping of such animal, or to continue to have any of the same stated above after a permit has been denied.”

You need a permit from the animal control unit, and you must notify abutting owners or occupants, who can object. Fees are set under Sec. 4-48, which was not read, so ask animal control for the current fee.

Setback / screening

“The coop or fowl house shall be a minimum of twenty-five (25) feet from any property line.”

Coop and run size

“The coop or fowl house shall have a minimum or four (4) square feet of floor area for each fowl.”

“All structures or combination thereof shall not be permitted unless the structures are screened from view of an abutting occupant's property in a residentially zoned district.”
