Lubbock, TX

Short answerYes: the City of Lubbock code allows up to 6 birds; roosters are banned; the cited code does not mention a permit; and the coop setback is 5 ft.

Buying notes for backyard hens inside the City of Lubbock corporate limits. HOA covenants and county rules outside city limits can differ.

Heads up: These rules apply inside the City of Lubbock corporate limits only. An HOA or neighborhood covenant can still ban hens. Those private rules are usually not public, so HenCheck does not look them up.

How many hens

“Except as provided by this section, six (6) chickens hens may be permitted in an R-1, R-1A, or R-2 zoned residence with the following requirements:”

Roosters

“Roosters are not permitted.”

Permit and fee

Code does not mention a permit. Ask the city whether a permit is needed before you buy birds.

§ 4.07.001 lists no permit for six or fewer hens. More than six needs a multi-pet permit under § 4.01.003, which was not checked.

Setback / screening

“Any such above-described enclosure that is less than 200 square feet shall maintain a minimum five (5) foot setback from a side or rear property line. Any such above-described enclosure that is more than two hundred (200) square feet shall be subject to all setback requirements in chapter 40 of this code.”

Enclosure in the rear yard, at least 5 ft from side and rear lines if under 200 sq ft. Bigger enclosures follow the zoning setbacks in Chapter 40.
