The rule, quoted

Word for word from Irving Code of Civil and Criminal Ordinances § 6-62 Keeping chickens (Ord. 2021-10468).

How many hens

“More than one (1) rooster without having a minimum of six (6) hens or more than twenty-five (25) chickens total, including the rooster, on land of one (1) acre or less.”

Up to 25 chickens total, rooster included, on land of 1 acre or less. Over 1 acre there is no total cap, only the one-rooster-per-six-hens rule.

Irving Code of Civil and Criminal Ordinances § 6-62 Keeping chickens (Ord. 2021-10468).

Roosters

“More than one (1) rooster for every six (6) hens on land greater than one (1) acre.”

One rooster is allowed if you keep at least six hens (on larger land, one rooster per six hens). Habitual noise is still an offense.

Permit and fee

Code does not mention a permit. Ask the city whether a permit is needed before you buy birds.

§ 6-62 lists no permit for keeping chickens. Article IX (Animal nuisances and permits) was not checked.

Setback / screening

“A person commits an offense if he/she houses or keeps chickens in a structure or enclosure at a distance within twenty-five (25) feet from any building or structure used or intended for human occupancy or human habitation located on another's property.”

Coop and run at least 25 ft from any neighbor’s home or other occupied building.

Coop and run size

“A three (3) or more sided structure with a minimum of one (1) square foot of roosting area per chicken with a roof or cover to allow the chickens to remain dry and protected from the elements and has direct access from the roosting area to an outdoor enclosure that is a minimum of ten (10) square feet per chicken;”
